Common
Dishwasher Problems

When it comes to dishwashers several things can go wrong and stop them from working. Here are some of the most common problems our customers experience and what might be causing them:

Dishwasher Won’t Turn On: A faulty door latch, electrical issues like a blown fuse, tripped circuit breaker or power supply problems can stop a dishwasher from turning on. Check the latch and make sure the appliance is plugged in and getting power.

Water Won’t Drain: A clogged drain hose and filter can leave standing water and unpleasant odors and unsanitary conditions. Regular cleaning and checking of the filter and drain hose will prevent this and ensure proper drainage.

Dishes Not Cleaning: Dishwasher cleaning performance can be affected by spray arm blockages, food particles or hard water deposits. Low water pressure can also affect cleaning. To get clean dishes make sure the spray arms are clear of obstructions and check your home’s water pressure.

Water Leaking: Leaks in a dishwasher can cause damage to your kitchen and is a sign of a bigger problem. Common causes are worn out door seals, broken pumps, loose hose connections or faulty float switches. Fixing leaks ASAP will prevent water damage and costly repairs.

Dishwasher Maintenance Tips

Run a dishwasher maintenance cycle at least once a month using a dishwasher cleaner, or place a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher and run a full hot-water cycle. The vinegar solution or dishwasher cleaner will help to degrease and loosen food particles, kill odors and remove mineral buildup from the inside of the dishwasher.

Inspect the water supply lines every few months. Check the hose that connects the dishwasher to the water supply and replace it every 4-6 years for preventative maintenance. If leaks are a frequent problem, install braided steel-reinforced water lines to help minimize leakage.

Leave the dishwasher door open between cycles. Leaving the door ajar for a few hours after a cycle will help the dishwasher to dry and prevent odors and bacteria from forming and help the dishwasher to smell fresh.

Use a detergent that is specially formulated for use in automatic dishwashers. Refer to your owner’s manual for how much to use. Too much detergent can lead to film buildup on the dishes and dishwasher components, and eventually cause corrosion on the spray arms and sensors.

Inspect the filters and spray arms monthly. Rinse the filter screen. At the bottom of the dishwasher, there is a filter screen that should be removed and rinsed with water on a regular basis. Try to rinse the filter at least once a week to prevent food particles from accumulating. The spray arms should also be wiped down every month or so and you should make sure that the spray holes are not clogged for maximum water pressure and coverage.

Load the dishwasher correctly. Always load your dishwasher as the manufacturer instructs, as they are optimized for a specific loading pattern. Dishwashers work best when the dishes do not overcrowd and interrupt the spray pattern. Make sure that large dishes don't obstruct the spray arms and prevent them from rotating freely and avoid fragile or easily bent items that rattle around during the cycle.
